be WELL. . . this Global Wellness Day

Today marks the 10th Annual Global Wellness Day, a special day to celebrate and focus on your own physical and mental health.  With the motto 'One day can change your life' it is a day dedicated to focusing on living well and creating awareness of our lives.

Part of our core brand values at Mala and Mantra is fostering and promoting mindfulness and wellness.  Our mission is to empower people across the globe with tools to help them create, nurture, develop and maintain a mindfulness practice.  Our goal through the creation of these mindfulness tools is to help people achieve their own mental well-being and personal enlightenment.

To 'be well' to me incorporates a philosophy of taking care of the mind, body, and soul collectively.  All three components of this powerful trinity must work together in harmony in order to achieve a better overall quality of life and to aid in physical and mental health.

Global Wellness Day 2021 will focus on mental health which is such an important topic and until recently most people perceived as taboo to discuss.  I have personally and intimately experienced the pain of seeing someone I love and care for struggle with mental illness.  Mental illness is real and not an easy issue to grasp or contend with, especially when denial or shame is involved. Society has almost attached a label of weakness to mental illness which has created fear from taking the necessary steps to cure and treat it.  It is a subject most people choose to hide under the table.

It has been especially difficult to aid when a situation of mental illness has gone unattended.  I strongly urge anyone who is either suffering or cares for someone who is suffering from mental illness to begin the process of acceptance, this is the first step.  Accepting mental illness is an an empowering act which is critical for the healing to begin.  Once this happens the conversations can start taking place. Even though they may be very uncomfortable, they are absolutely necessary.  The next important step is ask and seek professional assistance based on the situation.  There are a lot of very compassionate mental health care professionals who can be of help.  Finding the right person is important as there is a great amount of trust to be developed.  Take the time to connect with the right professional.

I encourage practicing and creating habits to achieve mental health and overall wellness.

I stumbled across this great quote about what wellness is:

A state of which a human being functions at an optimal level of integration between the elements of body, mind, and spirit.  The well individual is one who is happy, healthy, and whole and who perceives his/her life as one with meaning and purpose.

- Richard Gerber, M.D.

Dimensions of wellness include: Social interaction, nutrition, exercise, rest, and mindfulness.  Start by implementing small changes in these areas and take it one day at a time.

I learned while caring for a loved one suffering from mental illness it was also important to be mindful of my own mental well-being.  My mindfulness and meditation practices are always a refuge for me allowing me to pause and just be.  I especially enjoy silent meditation in the early morning, it helps generate self-awareness and provides me with a sense of gratitude and appreciation for a new day.

I invite you this Global Wellness Day 2021 to focus on your own mental well-being and find tools and actions you can use and take to foster overall wellness of mind, body and spirit.

Namaste,

JPC
