It’s no secret that Mala and Mantra is on a mission to M-power women + the world through wellness. And one of our favorite ways to do so is by working with a Fair Trade cooperative of female artisans to create sustainable, handcrafted + Fair Trade products. This partnership not only helps youlive a more mindful + healthy lifestyle, but it also provides these Fair Trade artisans with a sustainable income, safe working environment + the opportunity to support themselves, their families + their communities. But with World Fair Trade Day coming up on Saturday, May 13, you might be wondering exactly what Fair Trade is, and more ways you can help support our Fair Trade artisans—and thousands more like them.
According to the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), Fair Trade is a trading partnership based on dialogue, transparency + respect. It seeks greater equity in international trade + contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to suppliers + workers around the world. Not only does Fair Trade help to fight global poverty, climate change + economic crises, but the system is also proof that businesses can put people first + still be successful.
This year, World Fair Trade Day's theme is all about uniting together to be "Agents for Change." So how do you do that? Thanks to the dedicated individuals over at the WTFO, we’ve got a few tips on how to BE an Agent for Change and help improve the lives of Fair Trade suppliers + workers around the world.
1. Buy Fair Trade products from local stores or online retailers, and encourage all of your friends + family to do the same.
2. If your favorite stores don’t sell Fair Trade products, ask the manager or owner to start stocking them.
3. Organize a local Fair Trade event, where you help raise awareness in your community about the importance of Fair Trade, sustainable wages, safe working environments + supporting small producers from around the globe.
4. Celebrate World Fair Trade Day on May 13! Be an agent for change by joining in with the campaign and showing your support for Fair Trade products + artisans. Learn more about this year’s campaign here.
